The highway that determines the future for Syria and its

900,000 have fled up the M5 in search of safety as Assad tries to regain last rebel strongholdIt was dawn when the Hussein family packed up to leave their home in Saraqeb. But in the end, the looming violence of Bashar al-Assad’s new campaign against Idlib, the last rebel stronghold in the country, led them to pack up the car. Hussein’s father cried as he bid farewell to his house. Continue reading…

UK immigration plans prompt fresh calls for ‘Scottish visa’

UK immigration plans prompt fresh calls for ‘Scottish visa’

Nicola Sturgeon calls for immigration powers to be devolved as industry bodies condemn proposalsThere has been widespread condemnation in Scotland of the UK government’s immigration plans, as industry bodies representing tourism, farming, fishing and care work say Westminster’s refusal to take into account the country’s unique population challenges make an unarguable case for a differentiated Scottish scheme after Brexit. The first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, described the plans as “devastating for Scotland’s economy” and called for powers over immigration to be devolved to the Holyrood parliament, as she proposed last month in a policy paper setting out her own plans for flexible “Scottish visa” to deal with the country’s falling birth rate and ageing population. 9.47am GMT The consumer price index (CPI) of inflation (still the measure used by the Bank of England, despite the ONS’s best efforts) has faded over the past few years as the effects of the post-Brexit-vote devaluation of sterling have passed through. The rise in inflation is largely the result of higher prices at the pump and airfares falling by less than a year ago. In addition, gas and electricity prices were unchanged this month, but fell this time last year due to the introduction of the energy price cap. 9.31am GMT The UK’s consumer price index of inflation rose by 1.8% year-on-year in January, the fastest rate of growth in six months, according to the Office for National Statistics.

When the bus ride to your destination is just a click away

When the bus ride to your destination is just a

With bus routes severely curtailed outside big cities, is demand-responsive transport the answer? When my dad moved from Birmingham into residential care near my home in Liverpool last autumn, my first consideration – as a non-driver and not-very-good cyclist – was how often I’d be able to visit him. The best home we found for him was a 45-minute walk or a £5 cab ride away, with no direct bus since the hourly council-subsidised service was cut in 2017.There was a solution at hand: ArrivaClick, a form of “demand-responsive” public transport that I describe to perplexed friends as a cross between an Uber and a bus, and has been running across south Liverpool since mid-2018. You download an app, enter your card details, location and destination, and a few seconds later you’re informed whether there’s a minibus within a five- to 15-minute timescale that can pick you up a few yards from where you’re standing.
