“When the light breaks” – What is worth the Icelandic film which opens Un Certain Regard?

Iceland. On a beach, the young Una, a pretty blonde with cropped hair and a bisexual art student, meets up with Diddi, her new lover, who is on the brink of breaking up with his girlfriend to wholly embrace his relationship with Una. But during this progressing towards a breakup, a grave accident happens, and Diddi dies. Una finds herself the ‘widow’ of a love which was still unknown to almost everyone, and which she must hide in order not to further griever her lover’s partner.

This film by Rúnar Rúnarsson is the opener for Un Certain Regard. Without pretentiousness and with great sensibility, it portrays the psychological journey of a young woman towards a possible grief. Most notable are Rúnarsson’s artful crafting of dialogues and his attention to the selves within the film – particularly with a beautiful scene of shared complicity between Una and her father.
