Biden returning to White House for first time since ending presidential bid, COVID diagnosis

President Biden is scheduled to return to the White House for the first time since ending his re-election campaign.Biden tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday while campaigning in Nevada and has since been isolated at his Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, home. Just days later, Biden made a sudden withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race via a written statement. The president has not made any public appearances since both his diagnosis and suspending his re-election bid despite growing concerns over his fitness to serve. After staying out of the public eye for almost a week, the president will reportedly travel from Delaware to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday afternoon, according to the White House daily press schedule. BIDEN MAKES BIZARRE CALL IN TO HARRIS HEADQUARTERS HOURS AFTER DROPPING OUT OF RACEThe White House physician gave an update on the president’s health on Monday, sharing that his symptoms have “almost resolved completely” and that Biden “continues to perform all of his presidential duties.” BEFORE BIDEN, THESE 5 PAST PRESIDENTS FACES HEALTH ISSUES AMID RE-ELECTIONBiden called in to the recently revamped Vice President Kamala Harris campaign headquarters on Monday, making his first public comments since dropping out of the race. “I know yesterday’s news is surprising, and it’s hard for you to hear, but it was the right thing to do,” Biden told his former campaign staffers. “I know it’s hard because you have poured your heart and soul into me to help us win this thing, help me get this nomination, help me win the nomination and then go on to win the presidency.”In less than two days since Biden dropped out of the race, the campaign was renamed to “Harris for President,” and the vice president has already reportedly gained the support of enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, according to The Associated Press.

Top five moments from Secret Service director’s hours-long grilling after Trump assassination attempt

Top five moments from Secret Service director's hours-long grilling after Trump assassination attempt

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle testified for hours on Capitol Hill Monday, facing a grilling from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle over the agency’s lapse in security that enabled the assassination attempt on former President Trump. Cheatle testified before the House Oversight Committee, led by Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., after he subpoenaed her to appear.REP. MACE CALLS ‘BULLS—‘ ON RESPONSE FROM SECRET SERVICE DIRECTOR CHEATLECheatle testified before the House Oversight Committee Monday, just over a week after a would-be assassin Thomas Crooks attempted to take the life of Trump at his rally in Butler, Pa. on July 13. Trump, during his rally, ever-so-slightly turned his head—narrowly missing the bullet shot by 20-year-old suspect Crooks’ AR-15-style rifle by just a quarter of an inch. The bullet hit him, instead, in his upper right ear.The bullet killed firefighter, father and husband Corey Comperatore as he protected his family from the shots, and severely injured two others. Cheatle admitted under oath that the Secret Service “on July 13th, we failed.” Here are the top five moments from the highly-anticipated hearing: Cheatle told the House Oversight Committee that “on July 13th, we failed” when it came to her agency’s handling of the assassination attempt on the former president and the shooting at his Butler, Pa. rally. “As the director of the United States Secret Service, I take full responsibility for any security lapse of our agency,” she continued.”We must learn what happened, and I will move heaven and earth to ensure that an incident like July 13th does not happen again,” Cheatle also said. “Our agents, officers and support personnel understand that every day we are expected to sacrifice our lives to execute a no fail mission.”House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., called on Cheatle to resign, along with other Republican lawmakers. But Democrats called for her resignation as well, including Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., who said, “If you have an assassination attempt on a president or a former president or a candidate, you need to resign.”Cheatle has maintained that she will not resign, and said she is committed to getting answers on the massive security failure for the American people. TIMELINE: TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTRep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., says he plans to introduce articles of impeachment against her.”In light of Kimberly Cheatle’s unacceptable handling of the Trump assassination attempt, her disastrous appearance before the House Oversight committee today, and her refusal to resign, we have no choice but to impeach,” Steube said in a post on X. “I will be filing articles of impeachment against Kimberly Cheatle this afternoon.”And Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., accused Cheatle of perjuring herself and stonewalling members of the House Oversight Committee, telling her protectees are “sitting ducks” with her in charge.Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., told Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday that her response that she had “no idea” how her opening statement for today’s House Oversight Committee hearing on the Trump rally shooting got leaked to media agencies is “bulls—.” The fiery remark from the South Carolina lawmaker came after Cheatle was directed by Mace to answer a series of yes or no questions on the Secret Service’s response to the attempted assassination of former President Trump in Pennsylvania, in which Cheatle said “yes” to it being a “colossal failure,” and a tragedy that could have been prevented. “Would you say leaking your opening statement to Punchbowl News, Politico’s Playbook and Washington Post several hours before you sent it to this committee as being political? Yes or no?” Mace asked Cheatle. “I have no idea how my statement got out,” Cheatle responded. Mace fired back: “Well that’s bulls—.” Mace started mentioning news articles published between 5 and 7 a.m. ET, about three to four hours before she said the House Oversight Committee received Cheatle’s statement.Mace then asked Cheatle, “Have you provided all audio and video recordings in your possession to this committee, as we asked on July 15? Yes or no?”  SECRET SERVICE DIRECTOR OPENS TESTIMONY WITH FRANK ADMISSION: ‘WE FAILED’ — BUT WON’T RESIGN “I would have to get back to you,” Cheatle said. “That is a no. You’re full of s– today. You’re just being completely dishonest,” Mace told Cheatle, before being interrupted with a call for decorum inside the hearing room at the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill.Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday said that “for the event in Butler, there were no requests that were denied” from former President Trump’s team. “They asked for additional help in some form or another. You told them no. How many times did you tell them no? And what’d you tell them no to?” Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, asked Cheatle, referencing comments made by Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi. “What I can tell you is that in generic terms, when people when details make a request, there are times that there are alternate ways to cover off on that threat or that report,” Cheatle responded. Cheatle testified Monday that she called former President Trump after the shooting to apologize. She stressed, though, that the Secret Service and “the people that are in charge of protecting the president on that day would never bring the former president out if there was a threat that had been identified.” Trump told “Jesse Watters Primetime” in an interview that aired Monday night that Cheatle came to see him in the days following the assassination attempt.”It went very nicely. She was very nice, I thought. But, you know, somebody should have made sure there was nobody on that roof,” he said. Fox News’ Ashley Carnahan contributed to this report.

Trump reveals he spoke with Secret Service Director Cheatle, wants to know how would-be assassin got on roof

Trump reveals he spoke with Secret Service Director Cheatle, wants to know how would-be assassin got on roof

Former President Trump and his 2024 running mate JD Vance sat down for their first joint interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters on Monday following the assassination attempt on the GOP nominee’s life at a rally in Butler, Pa., last week.Trump told “Jesse Watters Primetime” embattled Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle came to see him in the days following the assassination attempt.”It went very nicely. She was very nice, I thought. But, you know, somebody should have made sure there was nobody on that roof,” he said. The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired several shots at the former president from the rooftop of a building roughly 130 yards away. Investigators are piecing together how the 20-year-old local resident was able to gain a clear line of sight at Trump. Eyewitness Michael Difrischia filmed Crooks lying down on top of the American Glass Research building, looking down the sights of an AR-style rifle.”I saw a younger kid running through the crowd and somebody had spoke[n] up [and] said the guy had a gun,” Difrischia told “The Ingraham Angle” last week.WHO WAS THOMAS MATTHEW CROOKS? WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT TRUMP’S ATTEMPTED ASSASSIN”The problem was the police officers were too close to the building. They could not see him,” he added. “We were trying to tell them he’s right there, he’s right there, but they just couldn’t see him.”Other eyewitnesses said they tried to warn police officers of a shooter before he fired the shots that grazed Trump’s ear, killed former Pennsylvania fire chief Corey Comperatore and injured David Dutch and James Copenhaven.Trump told Watters he was surprised at how close Crooks was able to get. “They said it’s really, it’s a — a bad shot would usually hit the target. And so I mean, it’s got to be, somebody’s got to be there. And it’s essentially a flat roof. I mean, I noticed that she [Cheatle] said, well, this is a slope roof where you think of like a barn where you have, this thing had just a little — a little upswing in it, a few degrees. This was a not — it essentially was a flat roof,” he said. Cheatle told ABC News last week the building the alleged shooter was on top of had a “sloped roof at its highest point.” “And so, you know, there’s a safety factor that would be considered there that we wouldn’t want to put somebody up on a sloped roof,” she said. Trump said he believes Cheatle was given “false information” when she mentioned the roof’s slope as a reason why there weren’t any Secret Service agents atop the building. The 2024 Republican nominee questioned why he wasn’t told to stay off the stage for 5-20 minutes before he came out and started speaking if there were concerns about a potential threat. OFFICER REPORTED MAN AT TRUMP RALLY WITH RANGE-FINDER 30 MINS BEFORE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT: SOURCE”You have to answer why couldn’t I have stayed off the stage for five minutes while they do their work? Why couldn’t, you know, how does a situation happen where a roof that’s plainly in sight from the location where I was speaking… why would somebody not have seen that?” he asked.Cheatle appeared on Capitol Hill Monday to answer for the security failures that almost led to the assassination of a former president. She acknowledged the attempt on Trump’s life was the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades. Two ranking members of the House Oversight Committee, Reps. James Comer, R-Ky., and Jamie Raskin, D-Md., called on Cheatle to resign from her post in a letter following her testimony, saying she failed to “provide answers to basic questions regarding that stunning operational failure and to reassure the American people that the Secret Service has learned its lessons and begun to correct its systemic blunders and failures.”Trump praised the actions of his Secret Service agents, who rushed to cover him after shots rang out at his rally. He told Watters his ear is healing and getting better. “We’re getting down to the small bandages. But it was a nasty one. And it was nasty, period. That was exactly one week ago from today, exactly. And, you know, when you think about it, it’s — that’s been a lot of territory covered,” he said. “Who — who would’ve thought this was going to be happening? But it happened. And I got very lucky, or God, I think it was God, actually.”

Top Republican, 70, calls Cheatle’s ‘sloped roof’ defense ‘final straw’: I could run around it ‘all day’

Top Republican, 70, calls Cheatle’s ‘sloped roof’ defense ‘final straw’: I could run around it 'all day'

A top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee dismissed suggestions from U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle that the “sloped roof” of attempted assassin Thomas Crooks’ sniper nest precluded it from being properly secured.Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., was part of a bipartisan delegation of committee members who toured the Butler Farm Show Grounds on Monday, where members indeed scaled the same glass factory building Thomas Crooks did before he took aim at former President Trump last week.Gimenez said he has been frustrated with the Homeland Security department for some time, including regarding the porous border and now relating to its subordinate agency, the Secret Service’s handling of Trump’s rally.”This entire administration is a complete disaster,” he said.TRUMP SHOOTING: TIMELINE OF ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW GUNMAN EVADE SECURITY”And so what really bothers me, and the reason I got up on the roof — I’m 70 — was for the director to say, ‘well, the steepness of the roof won’t allow Secret Service agents to be up there’ — That was the final straw for me.”Gimenez went on to call for Cheatle’s resignation. He reiterated that, although he is in good shape for his age, he is still 70.”I could run around on that roof all day long,” he said.”[Cheatle] should resign because she obviously doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”Sen. Ron Johnson, R-WI, previously released a timeline of the events on July 13. The lawmaker said that preliminary findings revealed the Secret Service did not attend a security briefing given to local SWAT and sniper teams in the morning. According to the findings, local law enforcement revealed they were not in regular communication with Secret Service officers. Johnson also said that the Secret Service did not initially plan to include any snipers at the rally, before they changed plans for unclear reasons.SENATOR POINTS TO ‘MISTAKE’ SECRET SERVICE MADE IN BLAME GAME OVER SWEEPING BUILIDNG WHERE TRUMP SHOOTER WAS”After all the failures that I’ve seen just walking the scene and the cardinal sins that I’m hearing that the Secret Service committed, I would assume this is just another part of this,” Gimenez responded. “And you must have a walkthrough,” he said. “You must have a final reading as to who is responsible for what. And what is everybody doing.”Gimenez said he too learned local authorities did not have a presence in the Secret Service’s command center, which he said creates a prime environment for disorganization and lack of communication in the case a threat does present itself.”This is not rocket-science stuff. This is a simple security measure that anybody would take,” he said.Gimenez also echoed concerns of Rep. Elijah Crane, R-Ariz., who pointed out a very tall water tower just east of the farm show grounds. As a former U.S. Navy SEAL and sniper, he immediately identified the tower as a crucial post for Secret Service countersnipers, along with other security miscues.”From there, you could see everything,” Gimenez said. “You would not have any, any line-of-sight issues because you’re way above the trees,” he said, as other lawmakers noted a tree partially obscured one oblique angle to surveil Crooks’ roof. For his part, Crane told reporters that aspect is just more proof “we are being gaslit and lied to.”From the Democratic perspective, ranking member Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said some facts about the scene “speak for themselves,” and sets the stage for the committee’s work later this week.PROFILER SAYS TRUMP SHOOTER, THOMAS MATTHEW CROOKS, LIKELY NOT POLITICALLY MOTIVATED, WAS ‘ORGANIZED THINKER’”Some of us are just members of Congress; we’re not experts. But seeing what happened that day is important because we have a hearing tomorrow,” he said.WATCH:New York Rep. Nick LaLota told Fox News Digital that the Secret Service got it “horribly wrong” on July 13, saying that they were “thwarted” by 20-year-old Crooks.”The Secret Service got it horribly wrong on July 13.” he said. “They were thwarted by a 20-year-old with no military or law enforcement training.”SECRET SERVICE EQUITY DIRECTOR SAYS DEI AGENDA IS A ‘MISSION IMPERATIVE,’ THE ‘ULTIMATE GOAL’”And yet there is an agency with a $3 billion budget and 3,000 employees,” he said. “It’s a horrible embarrassment for the agency.”LaLota said viewing the sight where Crooks’ opened fire “brought reality to the situation.””Of course, I’ve seen countless clips on TV and social media, and I’ve seen some of the digital recaps, but being here on the ground brings some good perspective as to where the would-be assassin was and where the stage was.”LaLota said that he hopes that Secret Service Director Kimblery Cheatle has the “courage” to “face the music” at the committee hearing on Tuesday in Washington D.C.The Representative said that he has questions regarding the tactics of the day, strategic decision-making and questions about the Secret Service.”I have questions in three main areas,” he said. “One, the tactics of that day, what was involved or not involved with respect to communications? Why didn’t we use drones? What were the authorities and communications between state and local, departments and officials and federal ones?””My second one is strategic, why in the days leading up to it, were decisions made to see the authorities to state and local folks inside perimeters that are usually known to be protected by the Secret Service themselves, what strategic decisions are made and why? When Trump with the agents on the Trump campaign asked the Secret Service for more resources, why did the Secret Service heads deny those requests?”LaLota said that he also has questions about the Secret Service administration and the culture that Director Cheatle fostered.”Are DEI priorities negatively affecting the hiring promotion, assignment processes within the department and thus making them less effective?” he said. “We should be a nation based upon merit, and we want our best and brightest in these, in these important jobs.””Is DEI infecting the Secret Service to the point where we put the leading candidate for president in 2024 at risk?” he said. “These are the questions that we need to get to the bottom here.”The representatives’ statements came after Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc, released his official 13-page preliminary findings of his office’s investigation into the assassination attempt. The preliminary findings determined that the Secret Service did not attend a security briefing given to local SWAT and sniper teams on the morning of July 13, that local law enforcement said communications were siloed and they were not in frequent radio contact directly with the Secret Service, that local law enforcement notified command about Crooks before the shooting and received confirmation that the Secret Service was aware of the notification and that the Secret Service was seen on the roof of the American Glass Research (AGR) building with local law enforcement following the shooting. The investigation also found that photos of the shooter were sent to the ATF for facial recognition and that local law enforcement said the Secret Service was initially not planning on sending snipers to the rally. The Secret Service did not return Fox News Digital’s requests for comment.Fox News’ Landon Mion contributed to this report.

Texas family sues Syria for death of loved one: ‘Plan to hold the regime fully accountable for its crimes’

Texas family sues Syria for death of loved one: ‘Plan to hold the regime fully accountable for its crimes’

The family of Majd Kamalmaz, an American psychotherapist who was detained at a government checkpoint in Damascus, Syria, in 2017, have filed a civil lawsuit against the Syrian government, accusing it of abducting, torturing and killing him. The lawsuit, filed Monday in federal court in Washington, D.C., on behalf of Kamalmaz’s four children, his widow and sister, accuses Syrian officials of deliberately killing the humanitarian and attempting to cover up his death. His daughter, Maryam, told Fox News Digital last month that U.S. officials had presented the Kamalmaz family with classified information in May, saying they believe he died in Syria’s notorious prison system. The lawsuit, filed under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act’s “state sponsor of terrorism” exception, seeks compensatory damages for wrongful death, assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and false imprisonment. The plaintiffs also seek punitive damages, bringing the total claim to at least $70 million.FAMILY OF DEAD WAR REPORTER MARIE COLVIN SUE SYRIA FOR HER DEATH”Today, on behalf of the Kamalmaz family, we have taken just the first step towards holding the Syrian regime accountable for its crimes against Majd Kamalmaz which culminated in his murder,” said Kirby Behre, lead counsel on behalf of the Kamalmaz family, according to a press release from the Syrian Emergency Task Force.”The family filed this suit to bring international attention to Syria’s crimes against thousands of victims, and is counting on the U.S. government to initiate criminal charges against Syria.”Kamalmaz was visiting an elderly family member at the time of his detainment and intended to establish a clinic in Syria to aid victims impacted by the civil war.His daughter, Ula, told Fox News Digital earlier this year that the family was never given a reason for their father’s detainment because there was never a case or crime against him. She suggested her father could have been detained due to his American passport.”He didn’t do anything,” she said. “He wasn’t very political, you know, the only thing he was doing was just … he was a psychotherapist working with refugees.” “They set up a temporary checkpoint, and it was set up to kidnap him. And they probably thought they could make money off of him. That’s how they do things in Syria. Now, unfortunately, they’ll detain the person, and they won’t let him loose until the family pays a really large amount to get him out,” Ula added. “So, it’s just very corrupt.”The civil lawsuit alleges that Dr. Kamalmaz was unlawfully detained, falsely imprisoned and subjected to inhuman and unlawful treatment in notorious Syrian prisons, including the Mezzeh Military Airport, which is known for the “torture and murder of perceived enemies of the Syrian regime.”EX-DETAINEE: SYRIAN PRISONS ARE ‘SLAUGHTERHOUSES’”Syrian officials and agents purposefully killed Mr. Kamalmaz. Acting in concert and with premeditation, these officials and agents deliberately killed Mr. Kamalmaz and attempted to cover up his death,” the lawsuit read in part. “The Syrian regime’s killing of Mr. Kamalmaz was designed to intimidate and terrorize the civilian population of Syria, the victims’ loved ones, and the international community.”The U.S. government has a fund set up for victims of state-sponsored terrorism that could provide compensation for the Kamalmaz family should the court rule in their favor and award them damages. The United States Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Fund can pay out claims, with a cap of $20 million per person, or $20 million to $35 million per family. Depending on the amount of money in the fund, the family could get a certain percentage of whatever award is given over several years.”I know that if my father was with me right now, he would not rest until all men, women and children are released from the Assad regime’s concentration camps,” said Maryam. “In his honor, we plan to hold the regime fully accountable for its crimes against Americans and Syrians alike, and we call on the U.S. Senate to urgently pass the Assad Anti-Normalization Act for the sake of Americans still held by this criminal regime.”

How does Kamala Harris poll against Donald Trump?

How does Kamala Harris poll against Donald Trump?

Before President Biden announced he would discontinue his re-election campaign and endorsed Vice President Harris, recent polls that had been conducted after his disastrous debate performance showed little difference between how he matched up against former President Trump compared to how Harris would. The New York Times assessed that Harris falls about two percentage points behind Trump in recent polls. The 46% to 48% difference is slightly better for Harris compared to how Biden polled on average – three percentage points behind the Republican presidential nominee, 47% to 44%. A New York Times/Siena College poll conducted in the battleground state of Pennsylvania from July 9-11, before Biden dropped out and before the assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, showed Harris was only behind by one percentage point in a hypothetical matchup against Trump. In Virginia, Harris had a five percentage point lead, compared to Biden only polling ahead of Trump in the same state by a razor-thin margin, according to the Times. Harris polled slightly better than Biden in both states among Black voters, younger voters and women. HARRIS OUTPERFORMS BIDEN IN 2024 SHOWDOWN WITH TRUMP: POLLAccording to a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll conducted July 5-9, 70% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents indicated that they would be “satisfied” if Biden withdrew from the race and Harris was nominated to run as the 2024 Democratic presidential candidate. In an open-ended question, that poll showed 29% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents named Harris as their pick for the Democratic nomination if Biden bowed out. NEW POLL REVEALS WHAT DEMOCRATS THINK OF HARRIS AS PRESIDENTSeven percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents referenced California Gov. Gavin Newsom, while 4% said they wanted former first lady Michelle Obama as Biden’s replacement. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer each had 3% of support, though half of Democrats did not specify an alternative candidate. As pressure mounted from Democrat lawmakers and donors for Biden to step aside, a poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released last week found that about six in 10 Democrats believe that Harris would do a good job as president herself. About two in 10 Democrats do not believe she would, and another two in 10 say they do not know enough to say.CLICK TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPResults of a CNN poll conducted by SSRS and released on July 2 indicated that three-quarters of voters say the Democratic Party would have a better chance of keeping the White House with someone else other than Biden at the top of the party’s ticket. In a hypothetical match-up, 47% of registered voters supported Trump compared to 45% for Harris, a difference that fell within the survey’s margin of error. Fox News’ Chris Pandolfo contributed to this report.

As campaign leak pushes Biden out, will Democrats anoint Kamala Harris?

As campaign leak pushes Biden out, will Democrats anoint Kamala Harris?

In the end, the pressure on President Biden to step aside, orchestrated by increasingly blatant leaks from Democratic leaders and public abandonment by party lawmakers, got to be too great, as was obviously inevitable. Not even an incumbent president of some accomplishment can run for reelection when donors pull the plug, when nearly two-thirds of Democrats don’t want him seeking a second term, and when a public declaration that Joe Must Go is a surefire ticket to television appearances.  Soon after Biden, recovering from COVID, rocked the 2024 race yesterday by endorsing Kamala Harris, which may well have handed her the nomination, the tectonic plates shifted. Not long after Biden declared it “in the best interest of my party and my country for me to stand down,” Harris said she was “honored to have the president’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.”Politics is a cold business. Journalists and commentators quickly moved on to speculating who Harris’ running mate will be.WEST VIRGINIA SENATOR TELLS FOX NEWS HE MAY RE-REGISTER AS A DEM AND ENTER WHITE HOUSE RACEWhat I will never understand is why Biden sent so many signals that he was absolutely, positively staying in the race. He said he looked forward to hitting the campaign trail this week. He had campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon make a rare TV appearance to say the boss wasn’t dropping out, and had a White House spokesperson rip news stories that suggested otherwise. Harris brings undeniable strengths and weaknesses, but at 59, she is now the youngest candidate in the race to take on Donald Trump. And the latest stunning turn – a president bowing out after all the primary votes have been cast – came a week after Trump was nearly assassinated, the bullet grazing his ear as he turned his head just enough that it saved his life.As Trump said at a weekend rally, “I took a bullet for democracy.”On yesterday’s “Media Buzz,” which ended before Biden’s announcement, Kevin Corke, in Rehoboth Beach, said the Democrats would be “done for an awful long time. The idea that a Black woman would be passed over, the way it would be perceived in the community, would be devastating.”The person most responsible for Biden stepping aside is Nancy Pelosi, who warned the president in private, then had allies such as Adam Schiff go public, then used leaks to the press to make Biden’s position untenable. The former speaker has not endorsed Harris. Neither has Barack Obama, who let it be known he thought his former VP would lose and said yesterday there should be a process for deciding the nomination.RFK JR MAKES BOLD DECLARATION AFTER BIDEN’S PRESIDENTIAL BID COMES TO AN ENDThis may be because they believe Harris would gain more momentum by defeating someone in a mini-primary, rather than looking like a choice imposed by the party bosses. That certainly can look undemocratic, though most Biden delegates would probably follow the president’s lead. The biggest mistake many journalists make is basing their assessment of Harris’ chances on her poll standing today.Trump very much wanted to run against Biden, especially since that disastrous debate. But it was also Trump, while cursing Kamala from a golf cart, who predicted he’d be running against her.The vice president had a rocky first two years, often at odds with the West Wing, but in the last year has gained in poise and confidence. Here are her assets and liabilities:Harris can claim a share of credit for Biden’s legislative accomplishments (though that was always too backward-looking). But that means she’s also saddled with his failures, such as Afghanistan and the border fiasco (of which she was nominally in charge in a no-win situation). Biden waited way too long to crack down on asylum seekers. She’s already being asked if she was part of a coverup – vouching for the president’s mental acuity while seeing signs of his decline close up. That’s a tough one.WHACKING THE MEDIA: TRUMP, VANCE, BIDEN, MSNBC HOST HIT PRESS FROM ALL SIDESBiden could never quite capture the country’s attention, in part because his inner circle kept him away from journalists – even two Super Bowl interviews –for reasons we now understand.Harris has to demonstrate that she can drive a message and should do plenty of interviews. Whether another Democrat challenges her or not, Harris, who began making calls yesterday, has to put together a team in a hurry to challenge a well-oiled Trump campaign that has been operating smoothly all year.It was Axios that reported “several top Democrats privately tell us the rising pressure of party congressional leaders and close friends will persuade President Biden to decide to drop out of the presidential race, as soon as this weekend.” Yet deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks told reporters that Biden “is not wavering on anything. The president has made his decision.”And the New York Times was right in reporting that “several people close to President Biden said on Thursday that they believe he has begun to accept the idea that he may not be able to win in November and may have to drop out of the race, bowing to the growing demands of many anxious members of his party.”CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPNow here’s the final irony: Some Republicans and conservatives, including National Review, are saying that if Biden isn’t fit to run a campaign, he can’t run the country now – and should resign.Which, of course, would give Kamala Harris a four-month head start as president.

Manchin considers re-registering as Democrat to run for president

West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin is considering re-registering as a Democrat so he can run for president.Fox News confirmed Manchin, who in May left the Democratic Party and registered as an Independent, said Sunday he is considering re-registering with his original party and running for president.Manchin said he was considering the party switch and throwing his hat in the ring for president, “Even just to have the discussion of bringing the party back to center,” Fox News’ Bret Baier posted on X.Earlier in the day on Sunday, Manchin called on Biden to step aside.WEST VIRGINIA SEN. JOE MANCHIN LEAVES DEMOCRATIC PARTY, REGISTERS AS INDEPENDENT”He will go down with a legacy unlike many people as one of the finest and surely a patriot, an American,” Manchin said of Biden during an appearance on ABC News’ “This Week.” “And so with that, I come with a heavy heart to think the time has come for him to pass the torch to a new generation.” Manchin changed his party registration from Democrat to independent this year, though he still caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate. In the three weeks since Biden’s disastrous debate performance against former President Trump, Manchin said he “thought the president needed time to evaluate and make a decision if he was going to at that time.” The senator also acknowledged Democratic colleagues facing competitive races in Congress or at the state level in November who fear Biden’s re-election campaign could ruin their chances. JOE MANCHIN FACES PRESSURE FOR 11TH-HOUR RUN TO SECURE CRITICAL SEAT FOR DEMOCRATSThe senator privately expressed grave concern to Biden’s allies, including Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., in the immediate aftermath of the debate but decided to cancel scheduled appearances on Sunday shows, Politico previously reported. In doing so, Manchin reportedly intended to give Biden time to decide the matter on his own, but the senator changed course. Manchin’s surprising decision to switch from a Democrat to an Independent in May came amid reports that he was being encouraged to run for governor of West Virginia by moderate Republicans dissatisfied with the party’s nominee, state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. It also came ahead of a deadline for filing as an independent in West Virginia. Questioned about those reports in late May, Manchin downplayed the rumors but would not rule them out. He said the Democratic nominee, Huntington Mayor Steve Williams, is a friend. FORCING PRESIDENT BIDEN OUT OF CAMPAIGN MAY HAVE BEEN MORE ABOUT CONGRESS THAN WHITE HOUSEThe West Virginia MetroNews reported sources “close” to the senator who said at least 20 Republicans “with financial resources” have encouraged Manchin to run for governor.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPSince that report was published, Manchin was reportedly bombarded by people urging him to run at an event at the Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, according to WVMetroNews. The Greenbrier is notably owned by the state’s current governor, Democrat-turned-Republican Jim Justice, who is term-limited and now is the GOP’s Senate nominee to replace Manchin.Fox News’ Aishah Hasnie and Fox News Digital’s Julia Johnson and Danielle Wallace contributed to this report.

Forcing President Biden out of campaign may have been more about Congress than White House

Forcing President Biden out of campaign may have been more about Congress than White House

Switching out President Biden for someone else may not have been so much about getting someone to defeat former President Trump but rather about saving seats down-ballot. In other words, polling has revealed that Harris does not match up much better than Biden. But it may be just enough to salvage seats. The Senate will be tough to hold. But this strategy may be all about flipping the House. The current breakdown is 432 Republicans to 220 Democrats with three vacancies. Democrats need to change a little more than a handful of those seats to reclaim the House. Democrats have done nothing but rail against Republicans and how they’ve run the House for a year and a half. Republicans gave them plenty of fodder. They took days to elect former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as speaker and then dumped him by the fall. The House then consumed 22 days to elect House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) – after burning through three other speaker candidates first. They’ve dealt with various censures and contempt of Congress resolutions, some of which have gone against the wishes of leaders. Democrats have also highlighted the various stunts of Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO). BIDEN DROPPING OUT OF 2024 RACE IS A ‘TECTONIC SHIFT IN POLITICS’: BRET BAIERSo, Democrats thought that pandemonium gave them a great chance to win the House. But Biden was nothing but a dead weight. In other words, this maneuver might prove to be more about the House versus the presidency. The House returns to Capitol Hill tomorrow. And expect a flurry of questions for Democrats about whether they support Vice President Harris to step into the void or someone else. It’s notable that senior leaders like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) are not endorsing anyone. They want to see how this plays out and not tip the scale in favor of any individual.Former House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) salvaged Biden’s presidential bid in 2020 ahead of the South Carolina primary. He has supported the president staying in the race but shifted his alliance to Harris today.CLINTONS ENDORSE KAMALA HARRIS HOURS AFTER BIDEN DROPS OUTThe Congressional Black Caucus PAC – not the Congressional Black Caucus – has endorsed Harris. The CBC never put out a statement after Biden’s terrible debate performance in late June. But CBC Chairman Rep. Steve Horsford (D-NV) stood by the president, speaking solely for himself. But when it comes to Harris, it may be about the math – and the Golden State. Forty House Democrats come from California. That’s 9% of the House Democratic Caucus and about 20% of the House Democratic Conference. Harris was a senator from California. So, it may be hard to overcome that. It’s also interesting that Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), who ran against the president, was ostracized by some Democrats to the point that he stepped down from a lower-tier leadership position after he raised questions about the president’s viability. The House Progressive Caucus has now endorsed Harris. Some members of the Squad are now backing Harris: Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Cori Bush (D-MO). The “New Dems Coalition,” which is a bloc of mainstream to moderate Democrats, has also thrown its weight behind Harris. Many of the Democrats calling on Biden to step aside in the early going were New Dems. This has been a slow wave building against Biden. A senior House Democratic leadership source told Fox News the day after the debate that “this was not sustainable.” The source added that those close to the president “have not served him well.”TRUMP SAYS BIDEN ‘IS NOT FIT TO SERVE’: ‘WHO IS GOING TO BE RUNNING THE COUNTRY FOR THE NEXT 5 MONTHS?’Don’t forget that Schumer met with Biden last Saturday at Rehoboth, Delaware. Schumer put out his statement about that meeting minutes before former President Trump was shot in Pennsylvania on July 13. It was thought that more and more Democrats would have come out last week, trying to push Biden out the door. But the shooting delayed some of that. Otherwise, this conversation may have come several days ago. It never happened because of the shooting.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPRepublicans are now starting to question whether Biden is up to serve the remaining months of his term. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said, “If President Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to serve as president. He must resign the office immediately.”Expect more Republicans to begin calling on Biden to resign. They could also begin to hold hearings and investigations, asking who knew what and when about the president’s cognitive abilities.Republicans will also target vulnerable Democrats in competitive states and districts, asking what they knew about Biden’s circumstances. And they will also wonder which of those candidates stands behind Harris. For instance, Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) faces a competitive re-election bid, and she backs Harris. Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) also faces a tough race, but he did not endorse Harris.Republicans will likely fold the president’s departure into their House and Senate campaign strategy this fall.Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.

Joe Biden bows out of the 2024 race – we lost a good president and a good man

Joe Biden bows out of the 2024 race – we lost a good president and a good man

I’ve been acutely aware of the possibility of President Joe Biden dropping out of the 2024 race since the debate at the end of June. I was still on maternity leave, but it was about all my friends could talk about. “What do you think he’s going to do?” they asked. “Do we like Kamala, now?” they wondered. “Is there time to swap him out and get on all the ballots?” they panicked. Now we know the answer. Biden just announced that he won’t be seeking reelection this November. And even though I knew it was coming, it feels profoundly sad to me.  ‘PROUD OF OUR PRESIDENT’: DEMS HEAP PRAISE ON BIDEN FOR DECISION TO END 2024 CAMPAIGNSad on a human level. Joe Biden is a fundamentally good man who did not want this outcome. He believes he can win, even if the data doesn’t say so. And sad on a political level. Biden was an incredible president with a record to be enormously proud of. Whoever is at the top of our ticket will no doubt celebrate his accomplishments – and him! – but there’s a joy to how he talks about what the Biden-Harris administration has gotten done that I’ll really miss. Like he always says, it’s personal for him. Getting the American Rescue Plan in response to COVID-19 passed was personal. Because of Biden, low-to-medium income earners got $1,400 to put towards groceries and rent. The child-tax credit was extended. And over $7 billion was allotted for small business loans. Getting the bipartisan infrastructure bill passed was personal. Because of Biden, our roads, bridges, public transport and airports are getting much-needed investment. Over $60 billion is going toward expanding broadband. And $55 billion for clean drinking water. It should be noted that not one single Republican voted for the bill.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONGetting the bipartisan gun safety bill passed was personal. Because of Biden, the largest gun safety legislation in over three decades was signed into law. It includes incentives to states to pass red-flag laws and prohibit people convicted of domestic abuse from owning a gun. It also expands background checks on people ages 18-21. Did it do everything Biden wanted? Absolutely not. But he got it done. Getting the Inflation Reduction Act passed was personal. Because of Biden, the U.S. made the largest investment in combating climate change on record. Corporations now have to pay their fair share. Medicare can now negotiate the price of certain expensive drugs. Insulin is capped at $35 a month! Come on, man, as Biden would say.  Getting the CHIPS and Sciences Act passed was personal. Because of Biden, over $50 billion in federal incentives was granted to semiconductor manufacturing, leading to thousands of new, good-paying jobs across America. There has been over $200 billion in private sector investment as a result. By the end of the decade, we’ll produce close to 20% of the world’s most advanced chips. That’s how you stick it to China. What’s more, under Biden we have record low unemployment and a record high stock market. We are producing more crude oil than any other country in history – 13 million barrels a day. Our economy is the envy of the world. NATO is stronger, and we are a force for good in the world. I could go on, but you’ll no doubt hear about all these accomplishments and more as the campaign unfolds.  I know that I speak for regular Democrats in thanking Joe Biden for an incredible four years and saying that we’re really, really sad. Father Time came for a really good one. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM JESSICA TARLOV

Caitlin Clark says All-Star win over Team USA isn’t ‘vindication’ for Olympic snub

Caitlin Clark says All-Star win over Team USA isn't 'vindication' for Olympic snub

Caitlin Clark is heading into the Olympic break with a clear conscience. The Indiana Fever rookie earned her first All-Star win after Team WNBA beat Team USA on Saturday night in a game that many looked at as an opportunity for Clark to get her revenge following a surprise snub from the U.S. women’s basketball Olympic team. But after the 117-109 win over the Team USA veterans where Clark led in assists for the All-Stars, the former Iowa standout said she took no “vindication” in their victory.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM”No, I mean they’re really good,” she said with a grin. “They have plenty of talent on that team. It was the same four years prior – I’m pretty sure Team WNBA beat Team USA [and] they were perfectly fine in the Olympics.”Team USA did suffer a loss ahead of their gold medal run at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. But this year’s loss followed a media storm that saw WNBA fans – more specifically Caitlin Clark fans – outraged when she was not selected for the Paris squad. But for Clark, she believes that Saturday’s loss serves more as a testament to the talent in the WNBA.WNBA ALL-STAR GAME LIVES UP TO HYPE AS FANS PRAISE COMPETITIVENESS, SWIPE NBA PLAYERS”I think, if anything, it shows how good this league is. It shows how much talent is in this league and how you have to show up and prepare every single night because there are a lot of players that aren’t even here on All-Star weekend that can be here and be in these moments too.”She continued, “I think for myself, from my standpoint, this is a great opportunity and will help prepare them for Paris and I’m going to be supporting them and cheering them on. I love the Olympics, I’ve loved the Olympics ever since I was a young kid and they’re going to be just fine. They’re going to win gold and dominate so I’m not worried.” The disappointment of not seeing Clark help continue America’s dominance in women’s basketball at the Olympics does have a silver lining for Clark. She’ll finally be able to rest after a nonstop journey that included a championship run in her final year at Iowa and becoming the NCAA Division 1 all-time leading scorer. “Such a fun first All Star experience in Phoenix!! The fans and city were amazing…,” Clark said in a post on X. “Now time for some rest and relaxation 🙂 see you all in a month.” Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Meet the American who popularized Latin music, Tito Puente, World War II Navy veteran and kamikaze survivor

Meet the American who popularized Latin music, Tito Puente, World War II Navy veteran and kamikaze survivor

You might say Tito Puente was born to connect cultures.Puente, after all, is the Spanish word for bridge. The New York City native, born to parents from Puerto Rico, found fame the world over as the Latin King, the Mambo King or, simply, El Rey — the King, in Spanish. His story is all American. FOX NATION’S NEW SERIES ‘MEET THE AMERICAN WHO’ TELLS OF ORDINARY AMERICANS WHO GAVE US EXTRAORDINARY INNOVATIONSBeloved for his multicultural percussion, Afro-Cuban rhythms and crossover compositions, Puente enjoyed acclaim that spanned generations and genres. The timbale, a set of high-standing drums developed in Cuba in the early 20th century, was his specialty.”Master drummer, percussionist, pianist, saxophonist, vocalist, composer, orchestrator, arranger and conductor,” the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College wrote in a 2011 tribute about the favorite son. “Out of the lengthy list of musicians who have contributed to the development and acceptance of our music throughout the world, none is more recognized than the man known simply as ‘the king.’”Yet much of his personal story is largely unknown, most notably his service at sea and his survival of one of the most frightening moments in the history of naval warfare. Teenage Puente joined the U.S. Navy at the outbreak of World War II and fought in battles across the globe.”He was a proud American,” his son, musician Tito Puente Jr., told Fox News Digital.Puente was buried with the full military honors of a grateful United States in New York State after his death in 2000. But like many members of the Greatest Generation, he rarely talked about his war service. Puente had an infectious style of musicianship on stage — a wide smile and a look of joy that permeated his energetic performances.Said Puente Jr., however, “if you looked closely at his face, you could see the scars from World War II on his face.”Ernest Anthony “Tito” Puente Jr. was born on April 20, 1923, in New York City. His parents, Ernest Anthony and Ercilla (Ortiz) Puente, reportedly arrived in Manhattan shortly before their famous son was born. Puente’s father provided for his wife and children by working at a razor factory in Brooklyn. The family lived at the corner of East 110th Street and Madison Avenue, according to Puente Jr., just a block from Central Park, in Spanish Harlem. MEET THE AMERICAN WHO WROTE ‘AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL,’ KATHARINE LEE BATES, PROFESSOR-POET PRAYED FOR UNITYPuente was a musical prodigy. He learned the piano at age 7, turned professional at age 13 and played over a dozen instruments. “He got his first big break as a professional playing with the Machito Orchestra as the drummer in the early 1940s,” Zach Smyers of the Hampton Roads Naval Museum wrote earlier this year.”The Machito Orchestra, formed by Frank ‘Machito’ Grillo in 1939, combined Afro Cuban Jazz with traditional salsa music. The popularity of this hybrid genre continued to grow with fans.”Puente was on the cusp of musical fame. The world had other ideas. He was just 18 when Japan launched its surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He was drafted by the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served aboard the escort carrier USS Santee (CVE-29) until the end of the war.He was a shipboard musician and bugler. “He’s the one who played taps,” said Puente Jr. But like every sailor, he was trained to fight at sea. He had plenty of opportunity aboard the Santee. The ship earned nine battle stars, from the invasion of North Africa in 1942 to the invasion of Okinawa in 1945.”He never told us about it,” said Puente Jr. There is likely one day that his dad never forgot, even if he never shared the story. The date Oct. 25, 1944, is heroic in military lore — it’s known as St. Crispin’s Day. MEET THE AMERICAN WHO ‘WON THE WAR FOR US’: ANDREW JACKSON HIGGINS, WORLD WAR II NEW ORLEANS BOATBUILDERThe Battle of Agincourt was fought on St. Crispin’s Day in 1415. King Henry V, according to Shakespearean drama, delivered his famous “Band of Brothers” speech before defeating the French that day. “From this day to the ending of the world/But we in it shall be remember’d/We few, we happy few, we band of brothers/For he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother.””The Charge of the Light Brigade,” immortalized by Alfred Lord Tennyson, took place on St. Crispin’s Day in 1854.Japan unleashed a frightening new form of aerial warfare on St. Crispin’s Day in 1944. The first kamikaze suicide planes attacked the U.S. Navy that day during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The USS Santee was among the first vessels struck by one of the desperate pilots. The bomb-laden plane crashed into Puente’s ship at top speed, tore a hole through the flight deck and exploded in the hangar, sending a fireball high above the carrier.Four crewmen, four of Santee’s band of brothers, were killed in the explosion. An untold number were wounded. The carrier was struck by a torpedo shortly afterward, causing the massive ship to list six feet.  CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE TO FOX NATION”I believe it was very traumatic for him,” said Puente Jr. “He went from being a professional musician to watching his friends get killed in the war.”Whether wounded during the kamikaze attack or in one of the ship’s eight other battles, the musician bore minor shrapnel scars on his face the rest of his life, his son told Fox News Digital. Two of the musician’s three children, Tito and Audrey — the latter a meteorologist with Fox 5 in New York City — received a commendation from the Military Honor of the Purple Heart in their dad’s honor in 2018.Puente Jr. never knew the details. “I guess he got home and just wanted to hone in on music and composition,” the son said. “It’s fortunate that his amazing talent survived the tragedy of nine battles.”Puente indeed returned to music after the war, with an assist from Uncle Sam in honor of his service. He attended New York City’s world-famous Juilliard School on the G.I. Bill and by the 1950s had emerged as a pioneering hitmaker of a hot new postwar American soundtrack. Latin music, flavors, cocktails and culture swept the nation, with Puente providing its most popular rhythms. “Fans enjoyed the way Puente put a big band spin on traditional Latin dances, mixing Latin sounds with jazz and other genres,” according to Biography.com.”Puente later added other Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms to his repertoire, including cha-cha, merengue, bossa nova and salsa, and his continuous experimentation and creativity earned him a reputation as a musical pioneer.”He wrote and recorded his signature hit, “Oye Como Va,” in 1962. A modernized version of a traditional cha-cha, his “Oye Como Va” was essentially a Latin and pop crossover hit and a live performance favorite. It’s now recognized as a standard of American music. “Few songs have embraced so much of the Latin American spirit in popular music as ‘Oye Como Va,’” Grammy.com reported in a review of the tune.It became a worldwide smash for Mexican-American guitar prodigy Carlos Santana in 1970, who recorded and released it soon after his breakout performance at Woodstock.”Santana’s version of ‘Oye Como Va’ … introduced Puente to a much larger audience,” music editor Matt Micucci wrote for Jazziz.com in 2017.For more Lifestyle articles, visit foxnews.com/lifestyle”As a result, Puente reintroduced the song in his repertoire. Furthermore, ‘el Rey’ began to get booked again at a difficult time when he had been struggling to keep his big band.”The huge hit for Santana also provided a windfall of royalties for the songwriter, who by then was pushing 50 — a dinosaur age (back then) with a big-band history in a world that had embraced pop and rock music.Yet Puente’s music still connected with a new generation of fans.Puente misread a royalty check soon after Santana’s “Oye Como Va” became a hit, according to one tale. He thought it was for $35. Instead, it was a check for $35,000.”Everybody’s heard of Santana. Santana! Beautiful Santana!” Puente beamed later. “He put our music, Latin rock, around the world, man!”MEET THE AMERICAN WHO FIRST RECORDED THE BLUES, NATION’S ORIGINAL POP DIVA MAMIE SMITHThe song continues to captivate global musicians and audiences. Santana re-recorded a version of the Puente tune in 2022 featuring 20 musicians from around the world.”‘Oye Como Va’ has endured the test of time and continues to bring people together to dance and sing together, around the world,” Puente Jr. told Rolling Stone magazine last year. Ernest Anthony “Tito” Puente Jr. died in a New York City hospital after he suffered heart trouble on May 31, 2000. His family was by his side. He was 77 years old. The “popular bandleader” was “adored by fans across the globe” and “several supporters waited in line for days to say goodbye” to him, wrote Biography.com of the vigil outside the hospital. He’s buried at St. Anthony’s Church Cemetery in Nanuet, New York. “I can tell you that it’s just a sad day, a sad day for the Latin music industry,” Eddie Rodriguez, Puente’s manager, told media outlets in the hours that followed the musician’s death.”Tito was known all over the world.”His success in music earned his children a lifestyle not known by the previous generation. He raised his children on the Upper West Side, not far from Lincoln Center, Manhattan’s sprawling entertainment complex, and his alma mater, The Juilliard School.”We were the Puerto Rican Jeffersons,” joked Puente Jr.In 1997, Puente had released a 50-song multi-CD compendium of his greatest works — and shortly before his death he recorded his 120th album.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERHe received the National Medal of Arts from President Bill Clinton in 1997 and was honored by the Library of Congress as a “living legend” before his passing in 2000.East 110th Street in Spanish Harlem, his childhood home, has since been dubbed Tito Puente Way. A huge mural of Puente playing timbale brightens the corner of Puente Way at Third Aveneue. Puente is celebrated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.He received six Grammy Awards, including a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.He played live for several presidents, his music provided beats for movie soundtracks and he starred, most notably, as himself in the 1992 movie “The Mambo King.”He even had a recurring role as himself on “The Simpsons.”To read more stories in this unique “Meet the American Who…” series from Fox News Digital, click here. Puente was “the most influential artist in the development of Latin American music in the United States in the 20th century,” biographer Steven Loza wrote in “Tito Puente and the Making of Latin Music,” noting the artist’s “overwhelming” body of work.”It is clear that Tito Puente ranks with the Ellingtons and the Beethovens — or, as those artists might put it, they rank with him.”

Billy Horschel steals the show at British Open, surges to top of the leaderboard in harsh conditions

Heavy rain and winds weren’t enough to derail American golfer Billy Horschel, who took a one-stroke lead in the lead-up to The Open Championship final at Royal Troon Saturday with his 2-under 69. The eight-time PGA Tour winner is looking for his first victory at a major, and with a 4-under score after three days of golf, his odds are looking pretty good. “I’ve worked my entire life to be in this position,” Horschel said after the round. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM”I’ve been in the lead many times going into a final round. Obviously, this is a major, it means a little bit more. We all know that. We know what this means to everyone. I know what it means to my legacy in the game of golf and what I want to do and accomplish, but I’m excited to be here.”I wanted to be here my entire life,” he added, “I’m finally here. I’m embracing it.” This is Horschel’s first time with a 54-hole lead in a major.
